Eisenbahn Connection Grand Opening

Wednesday, September 3, was a perfect day to be outside enjoying the sunshine, and I was happy to have the opportunity to be on our West Bend campus supporting the new Eisenbahn Trail and the newly completed connection to our West Bend campus. Students, staff and community members came together to celebrate the grand opening of the connection with a ribbon cutting and cake! The project was initiated by the West Bend Campus Student Senate and was able to come to fruition thanks to the collaboration between community organizations, faculty, students and staff.

The trail spans 25 miles, going through West Bend, Kewaskum, Campbellsport and Eden. As we quickly approach the fall months, I encourage you to get out and enjoy the beautiful sights along the trail, and feel free to use the new connection and make a stop by our West Bend campus to say hello.

New labs to greet students for fall

Even though most students are off this summer, big changes are happening for the Fond du Lac and West Bend campuses. Staff and faculty have been working hard to move two programs, Building Trades Construction Worker and Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology (HVAC/R) to the West Bend campus and set up for the new paramedic lab in Fond du Lac.
Bringing the two programs to join the Electricity program at West Bend will allow students in the three programs to work together as if they were on an actual jobsite. In addition to the new labs, construction crews have been working all summer to complete the new practice home that will be used as a lab for all three programs now available in West Bend. The new practice home will be completed in October.

In the new West Bend electricity lab each student get their own station to practice wiring techniques.
I am very excited about the opportunities these new additions will bring for our students. The new practice home will give students the chance to practice on-the-job skills with the guidance of their instructors.
Crews have been working hard all summer to complete the new practice home set to open this October. The new practice home will give students from all three programs hands on experience in their specific areas and teach them to work together on a jobsite.
If you’re wondering what will become of some of vacated program space at the Fond du Lac campus -- it will be converted to a state-of-the-art paramedic lab. Moraine Park will be the first school in the Fox Valley to have an indoor paramedic’s lab equipped with an ambulance. This will give paramedic students the rare opportunity to practice the high-stress tasks they must perform on a daily basis.
If you or anyone you know is interested in these programs, there are still openings available for fall. Classes begin Monday, August 26, I encourage you to come in and get signed up as soon as possible!

It is safe to say that there is never a dull moment here—even in the summer. Thank you again for tuning into my blog. If you have any questions or comments, please leave them below. I would love to hear from you!

Interdisciplinary learning and community support “drives” creation of new campus disc golf course

Last week I received the opportunity to participate in a very fun event and tried my hand at a new skill – disc golfing.  Moraine Park’s West Bend campus opened its new disc golf course on Thursday.  Students, faculty, staff and community members were present to celebrate by exploring the course and throwing a commemorative disc (watch out, mine made it pretty close to the basket!).

West Bend Campus and Community Partner Peter Rettler really got the ball rolling for the project.  The disc golf baskets were created by Moraine Park Metal Fabrication students and Graphic Communications students using minimal budget dollars. Metal Fabrication instructor Larry Clark worked with his students to design and build nine baskets. Graphics instructor Dan Wangerin and his students developed plans for the disc golf course and will continue working on the project this fall semester.

This kind of interdisciplinary learning and working is what Moraine Park is all about. These students gained hands-on experience working on a unique project that will be a staple on the West Bend campus for years to come — What a wonderful accomplishment!

Not only did Moraine Park students and departments work together, but a few West Bend community businesses and individuals stepped up to help with the project.  Jackson Truck Body sandblasted the newly built baskets and Kettle Moraine Coatings provided the Moraine Park blue powder coating for the baskets. Josh Hamm is a local golf pro in the West Bend community and helped to design the course and guide Pete along the planning process.

The course will be open to the general public within the next couple weeks. I’m going to need to get my “drivers” and “putters” ready!
